The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
