In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
