2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Shift Follows Poor Response
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a distinct direction.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address community desires.
Trend of Key Hires
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a sharper brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of talks, he officially joins us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and overseeing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all eager to persist observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
The President

Title Information and Concept
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, stakes, and challenges that change every session. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but players can look forward to more updates as production advances.
