The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where anything feels possible – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
