Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
