RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
