The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
