Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
